What is an implant?
An implant is an artificial root that is placed
in your bone. The implant can then be used to
support a single crown, a bridge, a partial or
a complete denture. Implants are a great tool
for replacing missing teeth or securing a partial
or denture. Ask your dentist if implants would
be right for you.

| 2. Is
there something other than a removable appliance
which can replace my missing back teeth?
Yes, you can have dental implants that will
support fixed artificial teeth. The implants
are artificial titanium roots that are placed
in your jaw and become attached to your bone.
The prosthetic teeth attached to the implants
do not have to be removed and will function like
natural
teeth.

How successful are implants?
Most studies show that the success rate for patients
who are good candidates and for implants
and have favorable conditions is over 90%. These
conditions include being in good health, lack
of serious health problems such as heavy smoking
or uncontrolled diabetes, proper implant placement
and design of the prosthetics, correct bite
adjustment and good maintenance and home care.

Can implants be used for patients of any age?
The health of the patient is more important to
success than the age of the patient. A patient
who is 75 years old and in good health may be
a better candidate for an implant than a younger
patient
with serious health problems. Motivation and
willingness to maintain good oral hygiene are
also important factors.

How many implants will I need?
Each case is unique, and proper diagnosis from
clinical examination, x-rays, photographs and
models will determine the best treatment approach
for you.

Are implants covered by dental insurance?
While some insurance companies do cover part
of the cost of the prosthetic restoration which
is supported by
the implant
(e.g. crown, bridge, partial, denture), most
dental insurance plans do not cover implant treatment.
Occasionally, medical insurance covers part of
the surgical placement. Implants can improve
the
quality of life for many patients and each individual
must weigh this benefit against the lack of insurance
coverage.
